Q) “Who is responsible for your partner’s safety?”
A) “Yes.”
1. NO bouting may occur without the approval and presence of instructors.
2. All training is light contact only. Masks must be worn when rigid simulators are in use. Gloves, masks, or other gear may be required by any instructor at any time.
3. The use of steel weapon simulators for drilling requires the use of mask, jacket, and gloves. Bouts with steel simulators require “full kit,” including but not limited to: mask, gorget, jacket, gloves. Instructors have the right to specify additional protective equipment as needed and depending on the level of protection afforded by the glove/jacket.
4. Students are expected to use only that gear which has been approved by staff, and to replace any rejected gear immediately. Loaner gear will be made available for this purpose. Gear will be inspected regularly for suitability.
5. Targets (or “cut number”) will be called out in cooperative drilling so that students know ahead of time which area is targeted by the incoming attack.
6. Students will lose their fencing privileges (be “sat out”) if they injure another student when bouting or drilling or are unable to focus/maintain light contact that day. Staff has the right to request students not participate if they are physically unwell (and will provide appropriate learning activities to substitute).
7. Students who repeatedly flaunt or egregiously violate the school’s safety regulations will be ejected from the school without refund.
8. Any student may call for activity to stop at any time to address safety concerns.
9. In case of injury, all activity ceases until suspected injury is addressed.
10. Students will obey safety instructions given by instructors/staff, particularly in reference to impact and heat mitigation, and will inform staff ahead of time if they have pre-existing injuries or health conditions which must be considered (said disclosures may be made in private where confidentiality is a concern).
